The purpose of this video is to explain the basics of Spray Painting, I will take you through 2 separate methods. We will Do 2 Panels, One with a Spray Gun and one with an Aerosol Spray Can (Rattle Can). I will take you through the basic tools and equipment required to do a DIY project fixing a small dent, scratch, prime and Spray Paint and how to Cut and Polish.
Learn the Basics of how to Spray Paint and follow this step by step guide to Spray Painting.
Hi Gunman i was the one who twitter’d you with a bunch of question about mini guns and the fake or genuine iwata gun questions.
I am still learning to spray but have spray painted a lot in school when i studied to a body-repairman or wreckage-repairman don’t know the proper titel for that kind of work in Australia.
So I am familiar with spraying and can handle a spray gun but I am still a newbie.
Today I own some no-name brand guns but they have been good for the small things i have spray painted.
Now I want to paint a little more often and then I want a gun thatI can rely on, a gun that I can’t blame the shitty paintwork on ๐
I am going to paint some bumpers and fenders and other car parts, maybe spot repairs when i I have enough experience and confidence.
And I will also paint some Kitchen cabinets and other wood working details, but mostly car details.
The mini guns i have looked in to are:
Devilbiss Sri pro
Iwata LPH80 1.2 E4 aircap
Sata Minijet 4
I know that you have said that the Sata brand is overpriced of what they can do. But I have can get a hold of some used in ok condotion for about $240 US or $328 AU dollars
I know satas spare parts also are expensive and so is Iwata.
The Iwata LPH80 are often refered to being slow but will still do a good job. And maybe slow is good thing when you are still learning.
I have read a few good reviews and bad about the Sri pro some say it is inconsistent and a few loves the gun for its wide spray pattern.
Maybe Sri Pro would be the best allround gun even for som medium big projects.
And for a larger gun i have to decide between the Iwata LHP 400LV4 (dont know what is best suited 1.3 or 1.4 which of the two gives more alternative to the other, for spraying water-based and solvents)
The other gun is a Devillbiss GTI i think you raved about this gun a while ago in a review of these guns think the Iwata lph 400 also was in the review. I want the large gun to be able to give me a smooth good finish and with as less overspray as possible. And air consumption, I have a smaller compressor but i will soon buy something a little bigger.
But if you lay aside the cost what gun would be a good gun for a newbie, fairly easy to setup?
Hope you understand my english.
Best Regards
Richard from Sweden
Thanks for taking the time to ask a question and I hope I can help, as far as a mini gun goes the SRI are a great gun but I still believe it is even over priced, if you look through my recent videos you will find a review on the Star evo 1.2 mm mini gun and it’s under $200 but a good gun for the purpose. As far as a good gun goes don’t look past the gti pro lite, you can change the air caps from LVLP (TE10) to Conventional (TE20) to HVLP (HV30) and only pay around $100 per air cap and can get good results with clear base and most thin primers/ sealers, I’d recommend 1.3mm but the 1.2mm setup may be better in cold environments where runs are a risk. If you want a good budget top coat gun then I highly recommend the DeVilbiss SGK 600-BV 1.4mm, known as FLG5 in UK also available in 2.0mm for a primer gun I have a review on this gun on my channel too.
You were referring to a what we call a panel beater at the start.
so at a $500 budget you wouldnt get just the prolite to use for both paint and clear? what would you use ?
Have a look at #2 & #3 on my top 10 list if you want quality and affordability.

hi gunman sick videos and info love them just waundering where your based at what state im in vic and need some work done thanks
Hi Gunman
Thankyou loved this.
Can you guide me as to what paint you used for bumper. It’s confusing.
Is acrylic poly enamel 2k what I should buy with clearcoat 2k to match.?
I
Hey gunny do you need to seal hifill primer for a 2k paint or can you put base coat over the top of it cheers
Thanks for taking your time answer my questions. I think the guns you referred to seem to be very good. The Star mini gun seems also to bea a good value gun. But I couldn’t find their website, maybe they don’t have one?
The Devilbiss GTI Pro Lite seems to be a very good gun. I was reading about and read about the gun (Devilbiss Tekna Pro Lite same as GTI Pro Lite what I could see) on few forum were they compared it to the Sagola 4500 Extreme and many had better finishes with the Sagola. But I don’t think it matter. For me what counts is that the gun should be fairly easy to setup and spray the same every time I use it but It should also be very easy to order spare parts which seems very easy to the Devilbiss.
Maybe you should order a Sagola 4500 Extreme or maybe Sagola could send you a test gun, had been very intersting to se a real cowboy shoot with the gun.
Best regards
Richard
the gunman channel on youtube isย excellent. I watch it every day ive learnt a massive amount from it. If you could maybe do a few more videos on spot/smart repairs, painting in cold weather.and for people doing it diy without a spray booth. that be great.thanks gunman for taking your time to set up the gunman channel and teach people all this. All the best and thanks again.
Thanks Gary, I have just finished editing a video on painting in the cold so it should be up here and youtube on Sunday. I’ll do my best to get footage of more SMART repairs we do.
I’m a newbie 22 years old. Bought a bunch of supplies was familiar with what I need I’ve got an old John Deere tractor that I want to reprint also a dent to repair in a 2015 dodge an also a 2008 white van that I want to repaint. So I’m going to get lots of experience even if I fail no big deal. Question I have when I went to buy paint they asked me if I wanted single stage or the next stage lower like what would be the difference ? Please reply via email I will not have access to this log anymore. Jacobahofer94@gmail.com Thanks.
Hi Gunman, i want to ask you, how much time need to wait between coats on base coat and on clear coat in paint booth without oven ? Im new on painting so get allways runs, alot of runs :/
Hi Gunman!
I recently attempted my first full respray (diy with no booth , just plastic sheeted the whole workshop ) and was rather disappointed with my results.
Now , I understand after watching all your videos that it will never be perfect first time around but I was hoping you could possibly shed some light as to where I’ve gone wrong ?
The car : 2000 Honda Civic Aerodeck (Wagon in AU) with almost no dents ,I only replaced the front wings which were the same colour from factory.
My prep work :
Masked car for sanding then sanded with 600 then 800 on a block for edges and DA for the rest. After this I used scotch brite on the whole car .
I then wiped the whole thing down with panel wipe and dried it twice followed by the final mask for paint.
My Paint:
I went for 2pac (2k) paint as my local auto painter told me it was the best choice for my first attempt at a respray and it wouldn’t require a clear coat ( unsure if this is correct after watching all your videos but I listened to him as he knows more than I do)
I mixed 2 parts paint to 1 part hardener with 10% thinner .
I applied 3-4 coats , tack ragged it and then left it for over 48 hours before attempting to finish it with 1500 and 200 wet sanding before Polish .
When I returned to begin finishing the “orange peel” was on another level …I mean horrendous but I continued to sand before polish anyway.
I then put some G3 finishing compound on my Dewalt polisher and applied almost no pressure on the lowest setting (600 revs) and it instantly ate right through the paint ๐
I ask for your opinion as I will be painting the whole car again in 2 weeks and don’t want to make the same mistake twice.
I appreciate you taking the time to read this and hope you get back to me .
You can reply to JordanMalarky@Hotmail.Co.UK
Thanks again ,

Awesome videos, gunman. I’m confused about one thing though. If you’re not painting the whole panel, you want to sand the surface you’re painting so the paint sticks, right? Doesn’t that mean you don’t want to be putting fresh paint over “old” paint that hasn’t been rubbed back a little?
So if you’re doing that with clear, aren’t you going to have a “big area” that is rubbed back, and a smaller patch of clear in the middle (so the paint sticks)?
In other words, I’m not sure how the new paint is meant to transition into the old paint.
Am a beginner trying to spray paint and i need help from you so that i can be best in spray paint i do have ur videos but i still need some basic. Am from Ghana -Accra

Hi Gunman. just a few question. for beginner
i would like to know how much psi do you use for LVLP spray gun in top coat primer etc etc… and does it depends on fan size ?? thank you so much.
What do you mean when you say 4 bars
Bar is a unit of measure for air pressure, 1 bar is equal to around 14.5 Psi. I don’t recall saying I would spray with 4 bar though as 2 bar is my standard pressure these days so 29psi.
Hi Gunman,
I am very appreciative of the videos you have made available for us DIY blokes.
I have a supercheap autos HVLP gun, and was looking to upgrade, I have a 2.5hp 50 litre tank, 190 LPM compressor (FAD) and I note that guns such as the pro lite require more than this.
Or am I interpretating the information incorrectly given the gun operates at say 29psi and FAD is measured at a higher pressure??
Cheers
Rick.
Hi gunman im jaime from mexico, just wanted to say that I love your videos they been great help im a beginner I stared painting four years ago and I have a lot to learn, keep up the good stuff.
Hi. Love your videos. I am a newbie and am experiencing the same problem. Sometimes the paintwork is good sometimes the ms or grey primer wrinkles up.what could be the problem. Thanks a million.
Hello gunman,
I drive a kenworth semi and am planning on painting it myself. My question is… I need to continue working and will only have a day or so at a time to do prep work. I can’t find anything on the web on things to do, or to avoid, when doing a prolonged prep job and driving the vehicle in between. I.e. Filler and no primer, Prime as I go (spot or whole panel), how to prep the prep work just prior to paint after it’s been driven in the elements, etc? I’ve done some painting 20+ years ago and am nervous about doing such a large job with the newer paints and guns. Thanks for the great videos. They have helped ease my anxiety and I am sure I can get it done!
Thanks in advance for your opinion and time.
Martin

Hey there Gunman,
Love your videos! Iโm trying to do some DIY work on my troopy, I.e. large areas I need to cover. What spray gun and accompanying compressor would you recommend for the job? Iโm prepared to spend a bit of cash to get a good finish.
Thanks,
Natalie
Hi Natalie,
Gunman may be on hols. I can only tell you what gun not to buy from my limited experience. I bought a Blackridge Pro gravity feed from Supercheap. I’m not sure if it was me or the gun that was crap, but I’m thinking the gun for self esteem purposes ๐ It was on special down to AU$84.00 I also bought a Blackridge 2.5HP Compressor, which seems okay to me.
Mike
I’ve watched a number of your videos and like your style of teaching. Easy to follow and not overly technical. I recall you saying that you were heading back to Perth in one of the videos. I am a beginner struggling with the clear coat. I’m sure its a mixture of things I’m doing wrong and so I’ve searched the web to see if there are any short courses for automotive spray painting here in WA with no luck. I really need the hands on / face to face to shorten the pain. Do you know of anyone/anywhere that offers short courses in WA?
Hi gunman I am just about to do my first paint job I’m going to paint my bike i have watched all your videos on YouTube and i have the confidence to give it a go you make it so straight forward and easy to understand just one question if i put down a black basecoat with white flames what are the best colour flakes should i use
Ps i am using a intercoat with the flake and than i am putting candy red over that does that sound rite
Thanks mate Paul Wallace
I need help. I am a beginner painter trying to paint clear coat over headlights I already sanded and prepped. Im using spray can. Ive been interested in learning how to do my own body work and painting for a while now. Id like to move up to using actual spray guns. Im in search of a forum or something I can get help when I need it. I sprayed my head lights and im not getting an even coat in spots and its showing all these cracks that I don’t c y theyd b there, I might have been painting to close. Anyway I need help and can explain the steps I took before painting if u need me to. thanks Steve
What is it you recommend for cleaning spray guns? Lacquer thinner only? Or is there something special to use?
And also I need a decent mini to get into some tight spaces around door hinges. What gun would do the best job that is a budget gun?
Thanks to you I did go by your recommendations on a decent hobbyist set up. My most expensive so far… A Finishline DeVilbiss.
Hi Gunman. Do you know the minimum size air compressor needed for the flg-g5?
Cheers,
John
Hi Gunman, I have been watching your videos for a while now. Eventually got the courage to attempt painting my first car HK Holden. I am very happy with the results so far and you have helped with all your videos. I have decided to flow coat this summer or at least when it warms up a bit. Thanks again Gunman.
Hi Gunman, I have just binge watched a load of your videos. I have never sprayed a car before but I will be doing my first one this year.
My question is about paint choice. What type should I use for an 80’s Ford?
I have a 36cfm compressor and I presume I need some kind of air-fed mask.
Also have the ANI F160 gun, currently with a 2.5 fluid tip for 2 pack epoxy primer. The car went back to bare metal for serious rust repairs hence the epoxy. Planning to buy the 1.2 or 1.3 fluid tip for colour coat – solid red. No clearcoat from factory.
The main question is what paint to use on top of 2k epoxy primer please? No spray booth, just a heath-robinson set of pastic curtains in my home garage.
Many thanks.
Dom.
Hi Gunman,
What was the grit of the soft backed sanding sponge you used just before the silicon remover ?
Cheers Mate,
Bazza
Do you have a way to contact you other than on here ? I would like to talk to you about a project I think you would be very interested in doing ?
